Insurance is an important part of modern living. It is particularly important in the farming industry. Despite the rustic settings of farms, accidents and deaths are frightenly common among farmers and ranchers. Their death rates are in fact higher than the rates of roofers, truck drivers and even law enforcement personnel.
Farmers and ranchers are exposed to many of the same risks of city dwellers, including fires, floods, storms and personal harm from machinery and vehicles. But there are many other risks as well. The types of vehicles used by farm workers, such as loaders and harvesting equipment, and that can increase these risks. Tractor accidents in fact represent the leading cause of farming industry deaths. The extensive use of vehicles and other equipment by farmers makes farm insurance as important as auto insurance. Another reason for farm insurance is for the coverage of property, including barns and outbuildings. And as with city dwellers, farmers need to be protected from burglary or theft.
Livestock can be a direct threat, or even an indirect one, since animals can carry diseases that can be transfered to humans. These can cause short or long-term illnesses. Farmers also come in contact with many potentionally dangerous chemical agents, including pesticides, which can lead to serious ailments. Lifting and carrying items on the farm can cause sprains or back injuries. And when a farmer is unable to work due to an illness or injury, it can be devastating to the business. Income replacement is an important type of farm insurance.
Farming also involves protecting not only oneself, employees and visitors, but the safety of the general public, since farmers provide food products that are consumed. For these reasons, public, product and employee liability issues are important. The many facets of the farming industry necessitate the need for farm insurance.
